Nevada Las Vegas received overwhelming support as college basketball’s preseason No. 1 team in voting by the Associated Press as well as United Press International’s board of coaches.
The Runnin’ Rebels, who finished last season 29-8 and one victory shy of the Final Four, received 30 of 65 first-place votes and 1,555 points from the nationwide panel of sportswriters and broadcasters to easily outdistance Louisiana State for the top spot. Syracuse was No. 3.
Defending national champion Michigan was No. 4, Georgetown No. 5, Arizona No. 6, North Carolina No. 7, Illinois No. 8, Arkansas No. 9 and Duke No. 10.
