Tops Seeds Advance in Section Tennis

The top eight seeded players advanced through two rounds of Section girls’ individual singles tennis playoffs Monday at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club to reach Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

No. 1 Brook Gelardi of Bishop’s didn’t drop a game in rounds two or three against La Jolla Country Day’s Edy Coleman and Michelle Desmaris. Sayaka Kimura, an exchange student from Tokyo and the second seeded player, also had perfect rounds, with shutouts against Crawford’s Tracy Leathers and Christine Fonseca of Helix.

Five of the eight players remaining in singles competition, including Gelardi and Kimura, were participants in Saturday’s team championships at Tennis Escondido.

Today at 12:30, doubles competition begins at SDT&RC.; The 32 teams that start will be reduced to eight after two rounds. The top two seeded teams are from Torrey Pines, runners-up to Poway for the 3-A team title. Krista Kuechler and Erin Bohrnstedt play in the No. 1 spot and Kim Sherrod and Kelly Kestler occupy the No. 2 position. Sherrod, a senior, and Kuechler, a junior, were doubles partners last year.

Quarterfinals in both singles and doubles begin Wednesday at 2 p.m.
