FALL ROUNDUP : Birmingham Advances to City 3-A Final

Birmingham High rallied to defeat Marshall, 9-15, 15-5, 15-8, 15-12, Wednesday in a City Section 3-A Division semifinal girls’ volleyball match at Reseda High and will face Garfield in the final Saturday at UCLA.

Sacha Klein had 14 kills and Meredith Lewis added 12 to lead Birmingham (16-2), which has won 15 in a row, including all 10 Valley Pac-8 conference matches. Setter Aimee Sayles had 38 assists.

Garfield defeated Franklin, 15-7, 8-15, 15-5, 15-8.

College Wrestling

Moorpark 20, Cuesta 15--Moorpark captured five of 10 weight classes at Cuesta to earn its 13th Western State Conference title in 20 years.

Brad Miya (118 pounds), Robby Cook (134), Doug Roberts (142), Serge Mezheritsky (150) and Carson Wollert (190) all recorded points victories for Moorpark (9-1-1).

College Basketball

Antelope Valley 94, Barstow 78--Antelope Valley, which won just six of 29 games last season, cruised to a nonconference victory at home and improved to 2-0 under first-year Coach Newton Chelette.

Tony Madison paced the Marauders with 18 points, including four three-point baskets.

Paul Ernst (17 points), Joe Mantashigian (14), and Walter Brooks (14) each added two three-point baskets. Antelope Valley made 11 of 16 three-point attempts but just 34 of 75 field-goal attempts.

Raynell Brown had 21 points and Anthony Beaugard had 19 for Barstow.

Antelope Valley took a 53-32 lead at the intermission and did not allow Barstow to get any closer than 12 points in the second half.
