COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Rancho Santiago Edges Cerritos in Basketball

Rancho Santiago College held on to defeat Cerritos, 78-76, when Gene Altamirano made a steal with four seconds remaining in the nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday at Cerritos.

Matt Lien had 20 points to lead Rancho Santiago. Corie Blount added 15 points, 15 rebounds--10 on offense--and five blocked shots. The Dons (4-0) took a 12-0 lead and were up by as many as 20 before Cerritos scored nine consecutive points at the end of the first half to trail, 42-30.

Wayne Gipson had 23 points and Scott Roczey 20 for Cerritos (4-2).

At the Mt. San Jacinto men’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 65, Riverside 58--Alan Schlines had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Orange Coast (5-0) to victory in the championship game. Scott DeStafano added 14 points, Chip Hanlon 12 and Brian Spratt 10 for Orange Coast. Darren Lax had 14 points and Deon Robinson 12 rebounds and eight points for Riverside.

In the semifinals of the Southern California Regional men’s soccer playoffs:

Orange Coast 2, Moorpark 1--Paul Oldham scored with a minute remaining in the match to give the host Pirates a victory and a berth in the finals. Orange Coast (15-4-2) will play the winner of East Los Angeles-Glendale Saturday at a site to be determined. Moorpark was a man down when the winning goal was scored because Billy Kranz, who scored the Raiders’ only goal, had been ejected. Mike Sandel scored early in the first half to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

In South Coast Conference wrestling:

Golden West 33, San Diego City 15--Visiting Golden West won four decisions and two forfeits to finish its dual meet season 6-6-1 overall and 4-4 in conference play. In the 126-pound class, Dennis Veazey won, 19-2, for Golden West. Also for the Rustlers: Donny Merlino won at 142 pounds, 10-0; Pat Tracey won at 158, 15-0, and Chris Shaul won at 167, 16-0. Russell Corbin (177) and Phil Meyer (190) both won by forfeit for the Rustlers.
