COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Saddleback Comes Back in Second Half for Victory

Saddleback College rallied in the second half to defeat Grossmont, 102-98, in the opening round of the four-team Saddleback men’s basketball tournament Friday at Saddleback.

Charles Lockard led Saddleback with 27 points. Sophomore forward Terrell Malone added 25 points and 10 rebounds for Saddleback, which trailed at halftime, 50-47.

Matt Thompson had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Gauchos (1-2).

Saddleback plays Pasadena tonight at 7:30 in the championship game. Pasadena defeated Moorpark, 96-83, in the other game. Moorpark plays Grossmont at 5:30 p.m.

In the College of the Desert men’s tournament:

Rancho Santiago 94, Long Beach 72--Matt Lien scored 25 points to lead Rancho Santiago in the first round. Lien, a 6-foot-9 forward from Whittier Christian, has signed a national letter of intend to play at California. LaVern Broadnax added 16, Gene Altamirano and Corie Blount 15 each for Rancho Santiago (5-0), which led, 60-43, at the half.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Golden West 104, Glendale 45--Donna Gondringer scored 22 points to lead Golden West (6-0) at home. It was the third time the Rustlers have scored more than 100 points in a game. Shwana Armstrong and Claudette Jackson scored 14 each, Bits Sirchia had 13, Cossette Smith 12 and Danielle Barlow 10 for Golden West. The Rustlers led, 56-11, at the half.

College of the Canyons 81, Fullerton College 51--Angie Nelson led Fullerton (3-2) with 15 points. Michelle Cabaldon and Tresssie Millender led Canyons (4-1) with 17 points each.
