Soccer Coaches at Moorpark Earn Honors

Frank Parodi and Daniel Ohayon have been named coach of the year by their respective conferences after leading the Moorpark College men’s and women’s soccer teams to strong finishes in their inaugural seasons.

Parodi shared Western State Conference coach-of-the-year honors with Glendale’s Joe Agoston. The Moorpark men’s team finished 12-4-3 and lost in the second round of the state playoffs to Orange Coast, the top-seeded team in the Southern California playoffs.

Ohayon, the South Coast Conference Coach of the Year, led the Moorpark women to a record of 13-2-3, 9-2-3 in conference play. The Lady Raiders finished second behind Orange Coast.

Sophomore stopper Kelly Kauffman, freshman sweeper Stephanie Gainey and sophomore striker Kristin Mealiffe represented Moorpark on the all-conference first team. Sophomore goalie Rustie Stevens, freshman halfback Elizabeth Knight and sophomore halfback Carol Miszkowski were second-team selections from Moorpark.

Heidi Voorhees defeated Notre Dame High teammate Emilee Klein, 2 and 1, Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the girls’ 13-18 championship flight of the American Junior Golf Assn. Junior Classic in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Voorhees, a senior, will play defending champion Vicki Goetze of Hull, Ga., today.

Sasha Vujic, one of five Cal State Northridge cross-country runners competing in the Desert Princess Biathalon, placed second in the three-stage event in Palm Springs on Saturday.

Vujic, a member of Team Vitesse, a Northridge-based club, timed 44 minutes, 15 seconds. The course featured a three-kilometer run, followed by a 10-mile bicycle ride, then another three-kilometer run.

Peter Delacerda finished fourth in 45:05, followed by Derik Vett (sixth in 45:20), Mike Rattary (seventh in 45:32) and Bob Evans (eighth in 45:52).
