The St. Louis Cardinals signed free-agent pitcher Bryn Smith of the Montreal Expos to a three-year, $6 million contract.

Smith will earn $1.4 million next year, $1.9 million in 1991 and $2 million in 1992. The contract also includes a $500,000 signing bonus and $200,000 to cover relocation expenses.

Smith has a career record of 81-71, including a 7-2 mark with a 2.65 earned-run average at Busch Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians signed free agent outfielder Candy Maldonado to a one-year contract worth $825,000, including a $50,000 signing bonus.

Maldonado, 29, hit .217 with 23 doubles, nine home runs and 41 RBI for the San Francisco Giants last season.

In seven seasons with the Giants and Dodgers, Maldonado has a lifetime batting average of .251 with 70 home runs and 322 RBI in 818 games.
