SDSU Out of Volleyball Tournament

Tara Cross had 20 kills and Antoinette White 19 as fourth-ranked Long Beach State routed visiting San Diego State, 15-7, 15-7, 15-10, in the first round of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at Long Beach.

Cross hit .486 and White .467 for the 49ers (28-5), who had defeated the Aztecs (19-18) twice during the regular season. The best the Aztecs could offer was eight kills by Amy Erben, who hit just .030.

“We got to see them at their best in Games 1 and 2,” Aztec Coach Rudy Suwara said. “We battled back in Game 3. It seemed like they had the run of the gym.”

TENNIS

Top-seeded Barbara Mueller of Tempe, Ariz. defeated Pani Fritz of Nevada City, 6-4, 6-4 to reach today’s 10 a.m. quarterfinals of the women’s 40 National Hardcourt Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Also advancing was La Jolla’s Suella Bowden, who defeated Linda Burtis of Del Mar, 6-2, 6-2.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Tim Rapp scored 26 points and Rick Batt 15 to lead UC San Diego to a come-from-behind, 80-76 victory over Cal Baptist in the first round of the Redlands tournament. UCSD (4-1) trailed, 41-36, at the half. The Tritons will play Menlo (5-0), an 85-38 winner over Cal Tech, in today’s semifinals.
