Chances Improve for Burt in Quest for Division I Post

Cal State Northridge football Coach Bob Burt moved up a notch in his bid to become the coach at New Mexico State as Denny Stolz, reportedly the top candidate for the vacant post, removed himself from consideration for the job on Friday.

Stolz is a former coach at San Diego State.

Burt, 48, has not had a losing season since taking the CSUN position in 1986. He is the first CSUN coach to produce more than two consecutive winning seasons. Burt said earlier this week that he had applied for the job.

Steve Shutt, assistant athletic director at New Mexico State, said the university has had “some correspondence” with Burt but that no interview had been scheduled.

In addition to Burt, others still being considered for the job include Jim Bradley, a former coach at New Mexico State, and Bob O’Mera, the coach at Western New Mexico. Both already have met with New Mexico State officials.
