Noriega Beats Teammate in All-College Tennis

USD’s Jose Luis Noriega defeated teammate Kevin Bradley, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the San Diego All-College Tennis Tournament at USD Friday.

In other quarterfinal matches, Ricardo Herrera (SDSU) defeated Dan Mattera (USD), 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, Chris Toomey (USD) defeated Thomas Simonsen (USD) 6-1, 6-1, and Tole Marinkovic (SDSU) defeated Dax Peterson (SDSU), 6-4, 6-0.

In semifinal doubles, Noriega and Toomey defeated Hunter Gallaway and Woody Yocom (SDSU), 6-4, 6-2, and Herrera and Marinkovic defeated Joe McDonough and Dana Gill (SDSU), 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Barbara Mueller (Tempe, Ariz.), Charleen Hillebrand (San Pedro), Judy Louie (Corona del Mar) and Stephanie Adcock (Los Gatos) advanced to today’s semifinals of the Women’s 40 National Hardcourt Tournament at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Mueller defeated Suella Bowden of La Jolla, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Hillebrand downed Alice Middleton, 6-3, 6-3. Louie defeated Janet Harpold of Atlanta, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0. Adcock won in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2, over Cathie Anderson of Rancho Santa Fe.

The semifinals begin at 10:30 a.m. No. 1 Mueller faces No. 4 Hillebrand. No. 3 Louie plays No. 2 Adcock.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego squandered two 11-point leads in the first half and dropped a L’Eggs New Mexico State Tournament first-round game to New Mexico State, 71-66. The Toreras, who took a 37-35 halftime lead on a Molly Hunter basket, were outscored, 11-0, during one six-minute stretch in the second half.

Candida Echeverria scored a career-high 29 points and Hunter had a career-high 18 rebounds for USD. The Toreras will play Monmouth College, a 114-58 loser to St. Mary’s, in a consolation game tonight.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Menlo College’s Ken Boldt made a 15-foot shot at the buzzer in double overtime to defeat UC San Diego, 86-85, in a Redlands Tournament game. Menlo’s Sabre Bowden made a three-point bank shot at the end of the first overtime.

Tim Rapp led the Tritons (4-2) with 27 points. Rick Batt and Gordon McNeill added 14 each. Menlo is 5-0.
