GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Harney Leads Esperanza to 78-40 Victory Over Western

Jennifer Harney scored 24 points and had six rebounds to lead Esperanza High School to a 78-40 victory over Western Friday in the opening round of the Saddleback girls’ basketball tournament. Kim Kordik added 22 points and eight rebounds for Esperanza (1-0).

Esperanza will play Los Amigos at 8 tonight. Los Amigos defeated Saddleback junior varsity in the opening round.

Los Amigos 60, Saddleback JV 9--May Ly and Carrie Elsaesser scored 15 and 12 points, respectively in leading Los Amigos. Elsaesser grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots for Los Amigos.

Santa Ana 29, Santiago 23--Gracie Lopez scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Santa Ana in the season opener for both teams at Saddleback.

In the Irvine girls’ tournament:

Brea-Olinda 65, Dana Hills 38--Senior guard Aimee McDaniel scored 19 points to lead Brea in the first-round game. Senior center Erin Schimeneck scored 17 points, had 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for Dana Hills.

Capistrano Valley 45, Loara 41--Alisa Farr and Peggy Rivas scored 11 points each for Capistrano Valley. Kristin Thibodeau scored 14 for Loara. Capistrano Valley led, 32-29, to start the fourth quarter and maintained the lead the rest of the way.

University 40, Savanna 38--Denise Gandara scored 18 points and Tara Wolff had 13 points and 13 rebounds for University in the first round at University High.

Jackie Boxley had 15 points for Savanna, which will play Orange Lutheran at 3:30 today in the secondround.

In nonleague play:

Fullerton 67, Kennedy 63--Center Summer McLane grabbed 19 rebounds to go with her 18 points for Fullerton.

Edison 71, Thousand Oaks 45--Senior guard Debbie Fischer of Edison made eight of 12 three-point shots Friday to tie an all-time state record for three-pointers made in a game, and lead Edison. Fischer hit five three-pointers in the third quarter, a new state record, and she totaled 17 points in that period.

Tustin 53, Garden Grove 31--Shari Needham scored 16 points and Wanda Sequeira had 10 points and 10 assists in Tustin’s season-opening victory.

Christine Garner had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Tustin which will play Pomona High School in the Etiwanda-Fontana tournament at Etiwanda High School in Rancho Cucamonga Monday night at 6:15.
