COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Saddleback Edges Cerritos at the Line in Overtime

Terrell Malone made two free throws with no time remaining in overtime to give Saddleback College a 101-100 victory over Cerritos Saturday in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Saddleback.

Cerritos (8-2) took the lead, 100-99, with three seconds to go when Wayne Gipson made two free throws. After a length-of-the-court pass, Charles Lockard of Saddleback missed a 17-foot shot, which Malone rebounded. Before time ran out, Malone was fouled, and he made both shots of a one-and-one.

In regulation, the Dons (2-4) rallied from a 21-point deficit with 12:05 remaining. Saddleback Scott McCullough hit a three-point shot with one second left to tie it, 88-88.

Saddleback made 16 of 26 three-point shots to get back in the game.

Lockard scored 27 point to lead Saddleback. Gipson led Cerritos with 34 points.

In the Grossmont men’s basketball tournament:

Rancho Santiago 83, Grossmont 75--Rancho Santiago won the championship as Matthew Lien, the tournament MVP, scored 12 and Gene Altamirano scored 19. Rancho Santiago is 9-0.

In the third place game of the Orange Coast Tournament:

Orange Coast 65, Santa Barbara 56--Chip Hanlon scored 18 points, had seven assists and seven rebounds, and Scott DeStephano added 19 points for the Priates (9-1).

In the championship of the Cypress College women’s basketball tournament:

Moorpark 68, Orange Coast 55--Katie Krause scored all of her 12 points in the second half as the Lady Raiders (7-1) pulled away after leading, 28-25, at the half. Debra Rabin led Morpark with 20 points, and tournament MVP Anglea Long had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Cynthia Kollar had 15 for OCC (8-0).

In the semifinals of the College of the Sequoias Tournament:

Golden West 99, Fullerton 61--Claudette Jackson had 19 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Rustlers in Visalia. Also for Golden West, Shawna Armstrong had 16 points and Dawn Haag had 14. Melody Mayfield led Fullerton with 12 points.
