A police officer shot and wounded a 25-year-old man Sunday night after a brief chase in East San Diego, a police spokesman said.

Officers Gerald Griffin and Teresa Clark were eating at a restaurant in the 4300 block of University Avenue at about 9:35 p.m. when witnesses told them a hold-up was taking place outside, spokesman Dave Cohen said.

Griffin ran outside and saw Curlee Markson of San Diego holding a knife, Cohen said. Griffin shot twice at Markson, but missed, Cohen said.

Griffin chased Markson on foot into a parking lot in the 3800 block of Fairmount Avenue, where he hit him once in the stomach with a shot, Cohen said.

Markson, who was in critical but stable condition at Mercy Hospital on Monday afternoon, will be charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, Cohen said.

Griffin, a three-year veteran, was put on administrative leave during an investigation, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
