BOYS’ PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : McCorkle Scores 32 Points to Pace Capistrano Valley

Scott McCorkle scored 32 points to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 67-58 victory over Simi Valley Wednesday in the championship game of the Simi Valley tournament.

McCorkle was voted the tournament’s most valuable player. Chris Kostoff added 17 points--all in the second half, including 12 in the fourth quarter, for Capistrano Valley.

In the Cerritos Gahr tournament:

Woodbridge 58, Centennial 50--Bryant McLemore, a junior forward, scored 23 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the field and had 15 rebounds for Woodbridge (2-0).

In the Garden Grove tournament:

Loara 89, Western 85 (OT)--Tes Whitlock scored 45 points for the Saxons. Whitlock made 13 of 23 field goal attempts and 17 of 21 free throws, including two with 10 seconds left in overtime to seal the victory. Western was led by Sam Sabbara who scored 39 points, making 10 of 23 shots from the field and nine of 10 free throws.

In the La Jolla Small Schools tournament:

La Jolla Lutheran 56, St. Margaret’s 54--Ryan Westendorf had 19 points and 19 rebounds for St. Margaret’s.

In the Santa Ana tournament:

Tustin 62, Sunny Hills 44--Jason Moore scored 17 points and David Beilstein scored 17 for Tustin (3-0) in a semifinal game.

In the Valencia tournament:

La Habra 59, El Monte 55--James Clegg scored 30 points for the Highlanders.

Troy 67, Sonora 59--Mike Abbott had 25 points for Troy.

In nonleague play:

Irvine 87, University 64--John Molle, a 6-foot-5 junior forward, scored 39 points, an Irvine single-game record, to lead the Vaqueros (2-2) at Christ College Irvine. Molle also had 17 rebounds. Greg Baines added 19 for Irvine. Donnell Dowdy scored 25 for University (1-1).

Long Beach Poly 52, Saddleback 34--Rod Hannibal led Poly with 22 points. Marco Gomez had 10 points for Saddleback (3-2) at home.

In the Laguna Beach tournament:

Savanna 89, Torrance 87 (OT)--Eric Preuss scored six of his 22 points in overtime to lead Savanna.
