Chapman College defeated Cal State Stanislaus 101-89, Friday in the Hutton Center, but for a couple of minutes the game wasn’t as close as the scoreboard indicated.

According to the scoreboard, Cal State Stanislaus trailed, 93-91, with 2 minutes 16 seconds remaining. Ken Brown made one of two free throws to apparently cut the lead to one point.

After Brown missed the second free throw, the Warriors missed a couple of short shots.

From that point on, the Warriors (4-4) didn’t score another point. Instead, they had three taken away.

The official scorer had mistakenly credited Stanislaus with three points during a timeout with about three minutes remaining.

Those three points, plus a three-point shot by Brian Rosco and two free throws by Richard Seay, fueled the Stanislaus rally that had cut a 91-81 lead to 93-91.

But with 1:38 remaining, the officials caught the error and adjusted the score. Chapman then led 93-89, and the Panthers ( 4-1) put the game away by making six of nine free throws.

“I didn’t think the game was in jeopardy even when (the scoreboard) said we were up by one,” Chapman Coach Bob Boyd said.

Chapman was dominant inside. Roger Middleton was especially effective, making 12 of 13 shots and scoring 27 points to lead Chapman.

Andre Hill scored 20 for the Panthers, including 11 in the first half, which ended with the Warriors trailing, 45-43.
