COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Balanced Offense Sparks Cypress

Vince Hizon scored 17 points, Brian Kenney 16 and Eric Pauley 14 to lead Cypress College to an 83-65 victory over Cerritos Friday in a semifinal game of the Golden West basketball tournament.

Hizon, a sophomore guard, was nine of 10 from the free-throw line. The Chargers were 26 of 32 on free throws. Kennedy, a freshman guard, made eight of 10 shots. Pauley, a 6-foot-9 freshman forward, had nine rebounds and seven assists.

Pauley has 15 assists in his last two games. Cypress (8-0) plays Antelope Valley tonight in the championship at 8. Cerritos (6-40 plays Golden West for third place at 6 p.m. Glendale plays Citrus at 4 p.m. for the consolation championship.

In another Golden West tournament semifinal-round game:

Antelope Valley 88, Golden West 85--Golden West trailed, 75-64, with five minutes left but the Rustlers’ rally fell short. Ric Van Scoyce scored 23 for Golden West (7-3) and Kevin J.J. Jenkins had 21. Kevin Andersen had 17 for Golden West.

Golden West was without sophomore center Alex Kreps, who hurt his ankle in Thursday’s 102-75 victory over Citrus in the first round. Dedan Thomas scored 19 for Antelope Valley.

In the San Jose tournament:

Orange Coast 78, San Jose 72--Chip Hanlon had 16 points to lead Orange Coast in the semifinal-round game. San Jose led by as many as 10 in the first half when OCC Coach Tandy Gillis put in guard Bill Maurer to help the Pirates break the press. Maurer didn’t score but had seven assists. OCC trailed, 37-34, and took the lead for good early in the second half. Marland Love, Paul Kos and Brian Spratt had 12 points each for OCC (10-1)

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 82, Chaffey 66--Chaffey led, 39-36, at the half but Rancho Santiago went on a 17-1 run in the first six minutes of the second half. It was the first time Rancho Santiago had trailed at the half this season. Mike Hunter scored 15 points and also had led Rancho Santiago with nine rebounds. Rancho Santiago (11-0) is the top-ranked team in the state.

Gene Altamirano led Rancho Santiago with 21 points. Matt Lien had 18 and Corie Blount 15 for Rancho Santiago. Lien was four of 14 from the field, but 10 of 11 from the free-throw line. It was the second time Rancho Santiago defeated Chaffey (4-6) this season.

In the Pasadena women’s tournament:

Orange Coast 69, Pasadena 52--Erika Manning and Kami Bigler scored 16 points each for OCC, in the championship game. Manning was voted the most valuable player in the tournament. Cindy Kollar had 12 points and was picked to the all-tournament team. Heidi Hasemann had 10 points for OCC (11-2).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

San Diego Mesa 56, Saddleback 47--Shannon Garnos scored 16 for host Saddleback (4-6). Jackie Anderson scored 25 points and 21 rebounds for Mesa (3-5). Saddleback led, 43-41 with 7:29 left but scored only four points the rest of the way.
