Kennedy’s Anderson Shoots It Up

Share

In the Simi Valley basketball tournament, Kennedy guard Garret Anderson scored 41 points in an overtime loss to eventual champion Capistrano Valley. That marked the highest single-game point total in Kennedy Coach Yutaka Shimizu’s eight years at the school. But Anderson didn’t stop there.

Anderson, who averaged 14 points a game as a junior, followed by scoring 30, 24 and 18 points in his next three games for an average of 28.3 for the tournament.

“I think he’s one of the real quality players in the Valley,” Taft Coach Jim Woodard said.

Finale fever: When Crescenta Valley lost to North Hollywood, 55-53, in the championship game of the its own tournament last weekend, it marked the Falcons’ sixth consecutive appearance in a tournament final dating back to December, 1987. Crescenta Valley has won four of the six finals.

“I wouldn’t say it was a fluke,” Coach John Goffredo said. Probably not, considering the Falcons have had 26 winning seasons since the school opened 27 years ago.

Long distance: Grant has set a school record for three-point field goals in a season just four games into the 1989-90 campaign. The Lancers have made 20 three-point shots after tallying 16 in each of the previous two seasons. Senior guard Keith Weinstein leads the team with eight three-pointers. “We’re emphasizing the shot much more than we have in the past,” Coach Howard Levine said.

Offense: Antelope Valley guard Chris Walters scored heavily in leading his team to the championship of the Cerritos-Gahr tournament. Walters, who has signed to attend Texas El Paso next season, scored more than 30 points in three of four tournament games, including 35 points in a 67-64 win over Cerritos for the championship.

Palmdale forward Gabe Higa, Golden League Player of the Year last season, is averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds--his team-high averages from last year.

Odds and Ends: Newbury Park has three victories in its first four games with contributions coming five deep in the Panthers’ lineup.

Junior forward Chris Falzone leads in scoring with a 16.3 per game average. He’s made close to 60% of his field-goal attempts inside the three-point line and seven of 16 attempts outside. Forward Joe Smigiel, fresh from the football team, is averaging 13.5 points, and point guard Tim Lane is averaging 10.3.
