HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Late Cold Spell Plagues Royal in 75-72 Loss

Share

Royal High went scoreless in the final minute and a half of its quarterfinal game of the Beverly Hills tournament Wednesday night, and Beverly Hills responded with six unanswered points to post a 75-72 win.

Royal (4-2) battled back from an early 14-point deficit to lead by as many as five points in the fourth quarter. Chad Smith, who scored a season-high 16 points, hit a baseline jump shot that gave Royal a 72-69 lead with 1:35 left.

But those would be the final points for the Highlanders, who are still without ailing starter Russell Myers--their leading scorer last year who has missed the past three games because of mononucleosis.

Beverly Hills (4-1) pulled within 72-71 on Jonah Naulls’ basket with 1:27 to play and--after both Chris Moriarty and Jared Byrne missed layups for Royal--Ziv Gottlieb hit a 15-foot jump shot that gave Beverly Hills a 73-72 lead with 51 seconds left.

Royal turned the ball over on its next possession and Gottlieb scored on a breakaway layup that gave Beverly Hills a 75-72 lead with 29 seconds to play. After a timeout, Royal’s Jeff Buckley missed an off-balance three-point attempt with seven seconds left and Greg Laranjo missed a 25-foot shot at the buzzer.
