PREP ROUNDUP : Katella Wins Title on Free Kick

Chris Orizaba scored on a free kick at the 75th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give Katella High School (8-1-2) the championship of the Brea-Olinda boys’ soccer tournament.

Katella had tied the score at the 39th minute on a penalty kick by Brian Schenk after Gary Hurtarte of Bell Gardens High School had opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game.

In other Brea-Olinda tournament games:

California 2, Brea-Olinda 1 (OT)--Jeff Ortiz scored the lone goal for Brea-Olinda (3-4-2) at the 17th minute of the third-place match.

Sunny Hills 1, Esperanza 0--Cameron Hull scored on a 25-yard kick at the 20-minute mark to pace Sunny Hills in the consolation final.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

El Toro 2, Servite 1--Ian Doleman had both goals for El Toro (3-2), the second the game-winner with one minute left.

In the Hacienda Heights Wilson boys’ soccer tournament:

Cypress 1, Diamond Bar 0--Cori Senko scored for Cypress (7-1-1) in a second-round match. In the first round, Ray Klug had both goals to lead Cypress to a 2-0 victory over Pomona.

In South Torrance girls’ soccer tournament:

Edison 3, Palos Verdes 2--Carrie Ramirez scored a penalty kick, and goalie Nikki Turner had two saves of penalty kicks to lift Edison in a consolation semifinal match.

In the Cerritos girls’ soccer tournament:

Marina 1, La Habra 0--In the fifth-place semifinal match, Wendy Gratteau scored for Marina (4-3-1). In an earlier game, Temple City defeated Marina, 3-0, in championship quarterfinal.

Laguna Hills 3, Valencia 0--Julie DeCastro, Kelly Besser and Krista Capshaw each scored to lead Laguna Hills (4-3-1) in a semifinal of the seventh-place bracket. In the seventh-place quarterfinal, Laguna Hills defeated San Gabriel, 4-1, and was led by Nicole Joliceour’s two goals.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Orange Lutheran 7, Vivian Webb 0--Amber Parkinson, Janet Greenway and Becky Greenway each scored twice for visiting Orange Lutheran (4-1). It was Orange Lutheran’s third shutout this season.

In the Santa Ana Valley field hockey tournament:

Baldwin Park 2, Santiago 1--Sandra Lohas and Lettie Sarrano scored to lead Baldwin Park to the championship. Stephanie Hiehan scored for Santiago.

Santa Ana Valley 1, Newport Harbor 0--Joann Thomas scored to lead Santa Ana Valley in the third-place game.
