BOYS’ BASKETBALL : Early Lead Stands Up for Simi Valley, 52-45

Steve Carnes and Mike Wawryk each scored 20 points as Simi Valley High nursed an early lead Tuesday to defeat Crescenta Valley, 52-45, in a nonleague game at Simi Valley.

Trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, the Falcons (6-2) chipped away at Simi Valley--even getting within a point in the third quarter--but were unable to take the lead.

“We needed a ‘W’ against a good team,” said Pioneer Coach Dean Bradshaw, whose team improved its record to 5-4. “Are we oiled up and ready to go? No.”

Nor is Crescenta Valley, as evidenced by poor free-throw shooting. The Falcons made just nine of 20 attempts. Simi Valley missed 11 of its 23 foul shots.

BANNING TOURNAMENT

Grant 72, South Gate 68 (OT)--Rene de la Hoya and Billy May shared game-high honors with 18 points each while rallying the Lancers to a second-round win in the consolation bracket at Long Beach City College.

De la Hoya made six of six free throws in the fourth quarter--including two with 25 seconds left to send the game into overtime--and May scored six points in the extra period. Grant (8-1) made 17 of 18 free throws.

Jefferson 93, Sherman Oaks CES 81--Jefferson outscored Sherman Oaks, 30-20, in the fourth quarter in a consolation quarterfinal game.

IOLANI TOURNAMENT

Cleveland 102, Waianae 38--Cleveland’s full-court press flattened Waianae in a first-round game at Iolani High in Honolulu.

Junior guard Patrick McCook scored a game-high 23 points and senior guard Eddie Hill added 18 for the Cavaliers (4-3).

NONLEAGUE

Notre Dame 65, Thousand Oaks 59 (OT)--Paul Hewitt scored a team-high 16 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Notre Dame (5-4) to a win at home.

Chris Loll and Dusty Lysobey each scored 17 points for Thousand Oaks, which was outscored, 21-7, in the fourth quarter.

Channel Islands 69, Ventura 58--Marlo Durmiendo scored 13 points and added 12 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Raiders at Ventura. Sophomore Noe Noyola scored a season-high 20 points for Channel Islands (6-3), which made 21 of 22 free throws.

Agoura 79, Rio Mesa 71--Junior guard Sean Martin scored 24 points to lead visiting Agoura (6-2). Senior Eric Thomas scored a career-high 37 points for Rio Mesa.

Servite 39, Alemany 36--Tim Fontanette scored a game-high 13 points for Alemany (6-5).

Burroughs 73, Glendale 59--Senior forward S. J. Boldvich scored 23 points, making 10 of 11 free throws, to lead Burroughs.

Center Ray Velasquez added 15 points for Burroughs (4-3), which outscored Glendale, 24-9, in the second quarter.

Montclair Prep 90, Camp Kilpatrick 48--Chris Sanger made 13 of 20 field-goal attempts and scored 29 points to lead the Mounties.

Santa Clara 57, Quartz Hill 51--Shon Tarver scored a game-high 23 points for the Saints (8-0).

Harvard 86, Calabasas 53--Off-guard Rick Osterloh scored a game-high 22 points to lead Harvard at home.

L.A. Baptist 36, Chaminade 32--Reid Chobanian made a steal and layup with 30 seconds to play to ensure the win at Chaminade.

Canyon 62, Bishop Diego 49--Canyon held Bishop Diego scoreless in the third quarter as it snapped a 29-29 halftime tie.
