Hunter Again Proves Valuable for Westlake in Wrestling Event

Billy Hunter of Westlake High won his third most-valuable-wrestler award in as many tournaments Saturday, helping the Warriors to a second-place finish behind Channel Islands in the Gold Coast Classic at Oxnard High.

Hunter, second in the state in the 165-pound division last year, pinned his three opponents to win the 175-pound division and extend his record to 13-0. Hunter was named the most valuable wrestler in the upper weights, an award he also won at tournaments in Rosemead and Newbury Park.

Three Marmonte League teams were among the first four finishers. Channel Islands won with 175 1/2 points and Westlake had 139. Royal was fourth with 94 1/2 points.

Westlake’s Farzin Daneshnia (112), Neal Mason (154), and David Schumm (191) won their weight classes and remained unbeaten. Daneshnia pinned two of three opponents and lifted his record to 14-0. Schumm and Mason each recorded two falls, improving their records to 13-0 and 14-0.
