THE SIDELINES : Pro Bowl Turns Bengal to ‘Lamb’
Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason is passing up a chance to play in the Pro Bowl for the second consecutive year to nurse injuries, because he says quarterbacks are sitting ducks in the game.
“That game really is a jailbreak for defensive linemen, and the quarterbacks are the sacrificial lambs,” he said.
He said quarterbacks get less protection because their regular-season teammates are not the ones staffing the Pro Bowl offensive line.
Esiason, 28, a six-season pro, also skipped the Pro Bowl game last year even after he was chosen as the NFL’s most valuable player following the Bengals’ 1988 Super Bowl season.
