PACIFIC 10 CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : Arizona’s Balanced Attack Stops Washington, 65-51

Matt Muehlebach scored 13 points, Sean Rooks 12 and Matt Othick 11 Thursday night as Arizona defeated Washington, 65-51, at Tucson.

The defending conference champions (7-2, 2-2) put the game out of reach with a 14-4 spurt in the second half, capped by Jud Buechler’s layup, to stretch its lead to 52-37 with 6:15 remaining.

The run came after Washington’s Eldridge Recasner made two three-point baskets and Steve Hall made other with 12 minutes remaining to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 38-33.

Five points was the closest the Huskies (6-5; 1-2) came in the second half.

Three-point baskets by Jud Buechler and Muehlebach helped Arizona to an 8-0 lead, and the Wildcats’ zone defense kept Washington from scoring for the first 3:42.

The loss was Washington’s ninth in a row to Arizona, which shot 55% and stretched its home winning streak to 38 games.

Recasner had 17 points and Doug Meekins 14 for Washington, which made 42.6% on 20-of-47 shooting.

Arizona State 75, Washington State 64--Alex Austin scored nine of his game-high 31 points during a 14-2 run late in the game as the Wildcats defeated the Cougars at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (7-4) notched their third consecutive victory while dropping Washington State to 7-6. The outcome left both teams at 1-2 in the Pac-10.

The Cougars led, 56-55, after a three-point shot by Darryl Woods, whose 21 points paced the Cougars. But Austin put the Sun Devils ahead to stay with a three-point basket with 7:49 left.

Washington State tied the game, 58-58, but then went 6:40 without a point while the Sun Devils scored the next 11 points.

Matt Anderson scored 18 points and Isaac Austin 15 for the Sun Devils. Brian Paine and Martin added 13 apiece for the Cougars.
