ROUNDUP : Canyons Women Post an Easy Triumph Over WSC foe Pierce, 81-57

College of the Canyons built a 14-point lead by halftime and went on to snap its three-game losing streak with an 81-57 women’s basketball win over Pierce on Saturday night.

Canyons’ Kim Posey came off the bench to score 16 points in the Western State Conference game at Canyons. DeeDee Hinson supported her with 14 points. Point guard Keira Irwin scored 11 points and had 11 assists for Canyons (13-4, 1-1), which led by as many as 35 points.

Center Michelle Ahnstedt and forward Carol Schoenmann scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, for Pierce (8-9, 1-1).

In other women’s basketball games:

Southern Utah State 79, Cal State Northridge 69--Led by Lexa Larson (20 points), Southern Utah State shot 57.1% from the field in the second half en route to a nonconference victory in Cedar City, Utah.

Joan Weinerth scored a team-high 18 points and teammates Jody Bittner and Haily Griffith added 12 for Northridge (3-12).

Bakersfield 59, Valley 50--With leading scorer Sandrine Rocher hindered by the flu, Valley lost a WSC game for only the third time in two-plus seasons.

Rocher, averaging 18 points a game, scored only four against Bakersfield, and Claudia Rocha came off the bench to lead Valley (15-4, 1-1) with 12.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 111, Bakersfield 109--Valley’s Andre Harrell hit a 17-foot jump shot at the buzzer to win the WSC game at Valley.

Bakersfield’s Robert Murphy, who led all scorers with 29 points, had tied the score, 109-109, with seven seconds remaining when he hit a three-point shot.

Seven players scored in double figures for Valley (11-8, 2-0), which had scored 124 points in its WSC opener at Canyons on Wednesday. Harrell scored 20 and handed out eight assists. Shawn DeLaittre followed with 19 points and added eight rebounds.

Citrus 61, Antelope Valley 60--Citrus pulled away in the final minute to remain unbeaten in Foothill Conference play with the win at Citrus.

Antelope Valley crawled back from a nine-point deficit in the second half to tie the score, 56-56, on a three-point basket by Tony Madison with 4:30 left before Citrus surged.

For Antelope Valley (15-6, 1-1), center Steve Walker scored a team-high 18 points and had 10 rebounds.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

La Reina 62, Oak Park 33--Marcy Reed scored 12 points for Oak Park (1-9, 1-2) in a Tri-Valley League game at La Reina.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Alemany split a pair of matches on the first day of the Etiwanda tournament at Etiwanda High. After dropping its first-round match to Garey, 4-1, Alemany rebounded to defeat Colton, 2-1, in overtime in a consolation match.

Keith Allen scored in the first overtime period for the Indians (8-2-2).
