Potts Gains Quarters in Super Seniors Tennis

Second-seeded Stan Potts of San Diego advanced to the quarterfinals of the San Diego Super Seniors tennis tournament at the San Diego Racquet & Tennis Club Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ralph Bach of San Diego.

Top-seeded Bob Seymour advanced to the quarterfinals after winning his match by default. Third-seeded Clare Hoke of Claremont reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over James McDowell of Huntington Beach.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene dropped its Golden State Athletic Conference opener, 91-79, to host Southern California College. Mike Flores scored 22 points to lead PLNC (0-1, 5-9) and Bryan Thurston added 17.

Mark Kraatz scored 28 of his 34 points in the second half as Christian Heritage defeated Grace College, 110-93. Brad Soucie added 30 for top-ranked Christian Heritage (11-4) on 13 of 15 shooting. Brooks Koble had a game-high 43 for Grace.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene signed LeAnne Skowronski, a freshman transfer from UC Santa Barbara. Skowronski, a 5-feet-6 setter, played her high school volleyball in Whittier.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Shannon Abrams scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Point Loma Nazarene from losing its first Golden State Athletic Conference game to host Southern California College, 78-74. Camille Armijio added 15 for PLNC (6-6). Gail Brown scored a game-high 28 for SCC (8-4).

San Diego State dropped its 12th game of the season as Nevada Las Vegas led from the start and eventually tagged a 91-60 loss on the Aztecs.

SDSU fell to 1-12 and 0-2 in the Big West as UNLV improved to 12-1, 4-0.

UNLV had four players in double figures including Linda Staley, who scored 25 points. Julie Evans led SDSU with 18 points. Crystal Lee added 13 and Dee Dee Davis had 11.
