HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Chea’s Fourth-Quarter Flurry Propels Birmingham to Victory

Junior Chet Chea made five of six free throws and scored nine of his 15 points in the final quarter Wednesday to lift Birmingham High over Monroe, 66-64, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference basketball game at Birmingham.

The Braves (5-9 overall, 2-2 in league play), who trailed by as many as eight points late in the game, were paced by Brian Bennett with 20 points and Kevin Horton, who had 10.

Monroe’s Jesse Wallace scored 18 points and Lodis Woodmore contributed 16.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Cleveland 84, Canoga Park 65--The Cavaliers, ranked No. 1 in the Valley by The Times, built a 32-7 lead early in the second quarter and cruised to an easy Northwest Valley Conference victory.

Andre Chevalier and Patrick McCook paced Cleveland (14-4, 4-0) with 13 points each. Eddie Hill added 12 and Bobby McRae scored 10 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. The Cavaliers pulled their starters in the final quarter.

Marcus Reed scored 28 for Canoga Park.

Taft 73, San Fernando 65--Sophomore guard Casey Sheahan scored a game-high 21 points, hitting five of seven three-point shots in the first quarter, to lead the Toreadors (13-5, 3-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Center Jason Deyoe scored 13 points and grabbed seven of his team-high 15 rebounds in the first quarter.

Sylmar 73, Van Nuys 55--Jason Miles scored a game-high 21 points and fellow forward Donovan Walker added 16 points and 11 rebounds to spark the Spartans in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home.

Forwards Michael Crawford and Robert McGee combined for 30 points to lead Van Nuys.

Sylmar improved to 9-8, 2-2.

Reseda 75, Poly 49--Forwards Marquis Burns and Marquis Willborn combined for 42 points for Reseda, which held a 23-6 lead after the first quarter, in a Valley Pac-8 game at Poly.

Jason Wilson paced Poly (1-14, 0-4) with 16 points and Marvin Perkins added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kennedy 49, El Camino Real 45--Garret Anderson scored 15 points for the Golden Cougars in the Northwest Valley Conference game at home. Kennedy improved to 10-6, 3-1.

Granada Hills 69, Chatsworth 55--Jermoine Brantley scored 17 points and had eight assists to lead Granada Hills in a slow-paced Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.

Camarillo 72, Newbury Park 70--Camarillo (12-6, 3-3) won its second consecutive Marmonte League game as David Harbour scored 39 points at Newbury Park.

Point guard Rick Schnell added 13 points for the Scorpions and Kevin Loveall scored 14 points to lead Newbury Park (6-10, 0-5).

Bishop Diego 71, Moorpark 66 (3 OTs)--Bishop Diego scored the first four points of each overtime period and finally polished off Moorpark in the Tri-Valley League game.

Point guard Brian Lester scored 21 points for Moorpark (8-7, 2-1).

Marshall Fundamental 74, Village Christian 54--Despite Matt Henzie’s 10 points and 12 assists, the Crusaders fell in an Alpha League game at Marshall.

David Orso scored 12 points and Vic Lozano added 11 for Village Christian (5-10, 1-4).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 64, Grant 36--Junior forward Jacinda Sweet scored 21 points--making seven of 21 from the field--grabbed 12 rebounds and had 10 steals in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood. Sweet also had five assists.

Suzi Shimoyama and Anna Jiles added 15 and 12 points for North Hollywood (8-5, 4-0).

Center Monique Young scored 11 points to pace Grant (2-2 in league play).

Kennedy 59, Taft 50--Kennedy’s Felicia Stanley scored 18 of her game-high 30 points in the third quarter as the Golden Cougars grabbed a 52-33 lead, then held on in the Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft.

Colleen Pratt scored 22 points for Taft (4-4, 1-3).

Highland Hall 51, Manoogian 21--Center Monica Palma had 17 points and 10 rebounds and guard Kristen Johansen added 14 points and had six steals to pace the Hawks (7-5).

El Camino Real 61, San Fernando 38--Nicole Nelson scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Conquistadores won a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Jenny Dinaberg added 10 points for El Camino Real (8-4, 4-0).

Van Nuys 61, Sylmar 36--Senior center Stacie Toon scored nine points and had 15 rebounds as the Wolves (14-3 overall) improved to 4-0 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play with a win at home.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Quartz Hill 1, Paraclete 0--Rob Keller scored from eight yards when Bryon Richard’s shot rebounded off Paraclete goalkeeper Terry Parish at the 25-minute mark in the first half of a nonleague match at Quartz Hill.

The Rebels, who improved to 9-5-2 overall, took 25 shots on goal and goalkeeper Chris Barti made eight saves.

Kennedy 5, Cleveland 3--Midfielder Keith West scored a hat trick and Brian Singer had four assists to lead the Golden Cougars in a Northwest Valley Conference match at home. Salvador Reyes made seven saves in goal for Kennedy (9-1-1, 5-0).

Chatsworth 5, Taft 2--Eddie Ramos, Jason Theodoratos, Mike Nash, Donnie Oades and Jeremy Foster each scored for Chatsworth (3-4-3, 2-3-1) in a West Valley League match at Taft.

The Toreadors fell to 1-5 in league play.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chatsworth 4, Birmingham 0--Goalkeeper Maggie Sherman recorded her sixth consecutive shutout in leading the Chancellors (9-1, 6-0) in a Valley League match at Chatsworth.

Kris Bassler, Laura Horn, Merridy Preis and Heather Gorman each scored in the first half for the defending City Section champions.

El Camino Real 5, Cleveland 0--Tatum Mahoney scored twice and Stacey Hopkinson, Kari Lee and Janette Risk each added a goal for El Camino Real in a Valley League match at home.

Goalkeeper Alex Telleson notched her fifth shutout of the year.
