NBA ROUNDUP : Mavericks’ Overtime Victory Leaves Wilkens Still Shy of Win No. 700

Cleveland’s Lenny Wilkens is still looking for victory No. 700 after going 0-for-Texas.

Derek Harper scored nine consecutive points in overtime at Dallas as the Mavericks spoiled Wilkens’ bid with a 105-96 victory.

The Cavaliers lost all three of their games on trip through Texas.

“I don’t think about it,” Wilkens said of the coaching milestone. “The victory will come.”

Harper hit four consecutive baskets, including a three-point shot with 18 seconds left in overtime, to knock out the Cavaliers.

Harper scored 28 points and Adrian Dantley added 27 for the Mavericks, who won their second consecutive game. Dantley had six points in the overtime.

Phoenix 117, Seattle 98--Tom Chambers scored 34 points as the Suns, playing at home, won their seventh consecutive game.

Kevin Johnson and Jeff Hornacek had 22 points apiece for the Suns.

The loss was Seattle’s 10th consecutive on the road. Sedale Threatt led the Sonics with 21 points.

Houston 127, Washington 107--Akeem Olajuwon had 23 points and 21 rebounds, Buck Johnson added 23 and Sleepy Floyd 20 to lead the Rockets at Houston.

Otis Thorpe, who finished with 19 points, had 11 in the third quarter. Mitchell Wiggins had 10 of his 16 points in the third quarter. The Rockets led by only three points at halftime.

It was the sixth time this season that Olajuwon grabbed 20 or more rebounds and the first time in Johnson’s career that he has scored 20 or more points in three consecutive games.

Ledell Eackles led the Bullets with 23 points.

Denver 126, San Antonio 99--Fat Lever scored 23 points and Blair Rasmussen added 22 to lead the Nuggets at Denver.

Eight players scored in double figures for the Nuggets, who had lost eight of 11 games.

Denver held a 26-23 lead after one quarter but broke the game open midway through the second quarter.

David Robinson led San Antonio with 24 points.

Philadelphia 108, New Jersey 98--Johnny Dawkins scored a season-high 28 points and Charles Barkley had 26 points and 22 rebounds to lead the 76ers at Philadelphia.

Dawkins had 14 points in the fourth quarter, including the final 10.

The Nets led 85-79 midway through the fourth quarter, but Philadelphia rallied with a 21-2 run to take a 100-87 lead with 3:44 left.

Purvis Short led the the Nets with 24 points.

There was a scuffle with 1:33 left in the third quarter between Barkley and New Jersey’s Jack Haley.

Utah 94, Sacramento 81--John Stockton scored 27 points at Sacramento as the Jazz won its sixth consecutive game.
