THE COLLEGES : Fearless Forecast for a Few Feats and Fumbles in 1990

Share

A few things that will--and won’t--happen on the college scene in 1990:

* Cal State Northridge will lose all 10 of its basketball games against Division I opponents, which is why you won’t see any progress toward the construction of an on-campus arena.

* Freddie Bradley will gain more than 100 yards in each of Moorpark College’s football games. Russell White won’t reach triple digits in any of Cal’s.

* Football Coach Bob Shoup will claim victory over the Cal Lutheran administration in the form of a cash settlement. Kyle Tarpenning, formerly CLU’s defensive coordinator, will claim Shoup’s job.

* Northridge’s softball and baseball teams will win CCAA titles and advance to the Division II semifinals. Neither will bring home a national championship.

* Donations targeted for Cal Lutheran athletics will continue to dwindle in the wake of the school’s battle with Shoup. As usual, Bob Doering, CLU’s athletic director, won’t comment.

* Albert Fann won’t win the Harlon Hill Award, but he will lead Northridge to its first Western Football Conference championship.

* Mel Hankinson, Master’s basketball coach, will continue to boast to reporters. Shelton Boykin, Valley College forward, won’t.

Full house: The Master’s has the best following of any Valley-area college basketball team, so you can believe Coach Mel Hankinson when he says “people are going to be hanging and flying from the rafters” when the Mustangs play host to Biola on Feb. 17.

Master’s, which will be celebrating homecoming, will be seeking its third consecutive win over nemesis Biola.

Hill to climb: Confidence is running high from the Hill on the Cal Lutheran baseball field. That would be Rich Hill, coach of the Kingsmen.

Cal Lutheran has 14 seniors on its roster in addition to four experienced transfers.

It’s a good thing, because there has been little opportunity to polish prospects. Cal Lutheran was forbidden to play its fall schedule because the conference it plans to join, the SCIAC, does not allow organized workouts between September and December.

Understandably, preparations for CLU’s usual spring slate of Division I and Division II opponents are behind schedule.

“Last year we were a little tired at the end,” Hill said. “Maybe the absence (of fall games) will turn it around.”

Sizing them up: The average height of the five College of the Canyons men’s basketball starters is 6-foot-2. The starting five for the Canyon High boys’ team is 6-4.

The ready-for-cable players: The Northridge men’s volleyball team showed its potential for soon being a prime contender in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. when it almost upset UCLA on Wednesday. CSUN, however, is, good enough for prime-time cable television.

When Northridge plays at Pepperdine on Wednesday, the match will be carried live by Prime Ticket beginning at 8 p.m. On March 23, CSUN again will be shown on Prime Ticket when it plays at USC at 7:30 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity,” said John Price, Northridge’s coach. “We’ve been playing Division I volleyball for five years and are the best-kept secret in the Valley. Win or lose, we’ll show people we have a good program. It could have a great effect on recruiting and community awareness.”

One-liners: Rumor has it that Coley Kyman, CSUN’s standout freshman volleyball player, will try out at quarterback for the Matador football team . . . Del Marine, the American Legion national player of the year, has quit the Valley College baseball team and transferred to Moorpark to play football . . . Lisa Huffaker, a freshman infielder who played on El Camino Real High’s City Section 4-A Division championship team last season, has quit the Northridge softball team . . . Cal State Los Angeles, CSUN’s opponent in back-to-back CCAA basketball games this week, snapped a 32-game conference losing streak by defeating Chapman last week.

Winging it: Joey Kirk, a former All-American forward at Cal State Northridge, has broken into the lineup of the Wichita Wings of the Major Indoor Soccer League.
