THE SIDELINES : Padres, Pagliarulo Reach Pact
The Padres and third baseman Mike Pagliarulo have avoided arbitration by coming to terms on a one-year contract that will pay him the same salary as last year, team officials said.
The deal, agreed to by the parties Monday, will pay Pagliarulo $575,000; he could earn another $90,000 in bonuses.
Pagliarulo, who hit .196 in 50 games after coming from the New York Yankees last season, was asking for a raise to $645,000, but the Padres had countered with $550,000.
“Yeah, I was thinking about all of the big raises everyone’s been getting, but then reality set in when I looked at the numbers I put last year. Who was I kidding?” Pagliarulo said.
