4 Times Editors Named to New Posts

Narda Zacchino, editor of the Orange County Edition of The Times, has been named associate editor of the paper and Noel Greenwood, deputy managing editor, has been named to the new position of senior editor, Times Editor Shelby Coffey III announced on Wednesday.

John Brownell, assistant managing editor, has been named deputy managing editor and Carol Stogsdill, executive editor of the Orange County Edition, has been named editor of that edition and an assistant managing editor.

“These appointments will strengthen the Los Angeles Times as we move into the ‘90s and will showcase the talents of four of the paper’s most innovative editors,” Coffey said.

Zacchino, Orange County Edition editor since March, 1983, and a deputy managing editor since January, 1989, has held numerous other positions in her 20 years with the newspaper, serving as a reporter, an assistant Metro editor and as Sacramento bureau chief.

As associate editor, she will oversee the feature sections of the paper, including View, the Magazine, daily and Sunday Calendar, Travel, Real Estate, Food, TV Times and the Book Review. She will also help formulate a new zoning strategy for The Times.

Greenwood, who had been a deputy managing editor since 1983, joined The Times as a Westside reporter in 1967. He has also worked as an education writer in the Metro section, assistant Metro editor, senior assistant Metro editor and Metro editor.

In his new position, Greenwood will retain his current responsibilities, which include overseeing local and regional news operations in California. His new duties will include supervision of a number of major initiatives by The Times, including the fax newspaper currently being sent to Moscow and editorial development of new sections and expansion into other areas of California.

Brownell joined The Times as a copy editor in 1980. He worked as assignment editor in the Washington Bureau, a senior editor of the Magazine and editor of the View section before being named an assistant managing editor in January, 1989.

As deputy managing editor, Brownell will retain his responsibility for Column One and the paper’s polling operations. His new duties will include coordinating enterprise reporting among the newspaper’s various news departments.

Stogsdill was named executive editor of the Orange County Edition in January, 1989, after joining The Times in 1987 as the edition’s executive news editor. She had worked previously at other newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune and the Orange County Register.

In her new position as Orange County Edition editor, Stogsdill will oversee the editorial operation of The Times’ largest daily regional edition. Her duties will include supervision of the edition’s editorial product and 200-member news staff. She will also work with the heads of non-editorial departments, including advertising, marketing and production.
