Nevada Las Vegas 12, CS Northridge 7--The Runnin’ Rebels sent 13 batters to the plate in a seven-run first inning against Matador starter Craig Clayton (0-1), who surrendered six hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

UNLV (1-0) built a 10-0 advantage by the fifth inning and led, 12-1, after six. Shaun Murphy, a former Simi Valley High player, had two hits and drove in three runs for UNLV.

Northridge (1-1) rallied in the late innings, scoring six runs on five hits and four walks in the sixth and seventh innings but the effort fell short.

Clayton, who moved to right field, had three hits, scored twice and had an RBI.

College of the Canyons 7, Ventura 3--Sophomore left-hander Mike Teich was staked to a 6-0 lead after five innings and cruised to the season-opening win in the first round of the Foothill tournament. Teich (1-0) gave up seven hits and three earned runs, striking out three. Jeff Adams pitched two innings of hitless relief.

The Cougars, who will meet Riverside today at 2 p.m. in a second-round game, stole seven bases in nine attempts and benefited from nine base on balls.

Dan Madsen was two for four for Ventura, which faces Glendale today at 10 a.m.

East L.A. 5, Pierce 3--David Machado went two for four and drove in four runs leading East L.A. to the win in the nonconference opener for both schools at Pierce.

Mission 9, Antelope Valley 4--Robert Chavez had two hits, including a three-run home run in the first inning, and freshman right-hander Nino Romo allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings at Antelope Valley.

Romo struck out eight and walked three. Shortstop Mike Rogers had four hits, and Manny Toledo added two hits for Mission. Antelope Valley’s Steve Lasagna homered and had two hits.
