Northridge Lands 6 More Football Players

Cal State Northridge has concluded its recruiting of junior college football players by securing six more athletes, Coach Bob Burt said Monday.

On offense, the Matadors added Anthony Nicholson, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound fullback from Taft; John Carlson, a 6-3, 230-pound tight end from Golden West; and John Chase, a 6-5, 260-pound offensive lineman from Mt. San Antonio.

Also accepting scholarship offers were Alo Sile, a 6-2, 250-pound defensive lineman from San Jose City; Keith Turner, a 6-3, 220-pound outside linebacker from College of the Sequoias; and Mike Zorn, a 6-3, 255-pound defensive lineman from Mt. San Antonio.

Northridge has recruited 16 JC transfers and expects to sign a handful of high school players in the coming weeks.

Lindsey Dunbar, a point guard who averaged 12.2 points and 6.3 assists a game at Canoga Park High, has been dismissed from the team for violating an undisclosed rule, Coach Jeff Davis said.

Davis said that Dunbar, a 5-7 junior, was pulled from the floor during Canoga Park’s 41-36 win over Chatsworth on Jan. 26. Dunbar suited up but did not play in a 60-40 loss to San Fernando on Thursday. After the game, Davis kicked Dunbar off the team.

“I didn’t like his attitude,” Davis said. “It was an attitude deal all the way.”

Davis said he would not invite Dunbar--who lives in Los Angeles and is bused to Canoga Park--to try out for the team next season. Dunbar was suspended for a game earlier in the season for similar behavior, Davis said.

Dunbar and off-guard Marcus Reed formed one of the quickest and most potent backcourts in the area. Reed, a senior, is averaging 19.7 points and 6.1 steals a game for the Hunters (9-12, 1-7 in West Valley League play).

Alvin Edington, a 5-11 junior, will start in place of Dunbar, Davis said.

Explaining that he’d rather watch his son play than coach him next season, Village Christian High basketball Coach Mike Henzie said that he will retire from his post at the end of the season.

Brian Gibson, the school’s junior varsity coach, will replace him, Henzie said. Henzie, in his third season as basketball coach, will remain as the school’s baseball coach.

“I hate to go out on a bummer,” Henzie said of this season’s team, which is 6-14 overall, 2-8 in Alpha League play. “But next year, I’d like to sit on a cloud and watch my boy play.”

Henzie’s son, Matt, is a junior point guard who is averaging 4.3 assists a game.

“He’s kind of ticked at me,” Henzie, 50, said of his son. “He wanted me to coach his senior year.”

Coley Kyman of Cal State Northridge has been selected Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. Player of the Week. The freshman from Reseda High had 21 kills, hit .405 and added 10 digs and five blocks to help Northridge to a three-game sweep of seventh-ranked Pepperdine last week.

In that match, and one against Stanford, the 6-foot-5 middle blocker had 32 kills and a hitting percentage of .380.
