SPORTSCOPE : $14,000 Raised for Paralyzed Torrance Football Player

The Jason Knight Trust Fund has raised more than $14,000, according to its administrator. Knight, 14, broke his neck in a sophomore football game last September while making a tackle for Torrance High School. He has undergone several operations and is receiving rehabilitation treatments at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey. He remains paralyzed but is showing signs of regaining some movement of his arms. Contributions to the fund are still being accepted. Professional tennis player Arthur Ashe will be the featured participant in a seminar examining “African-Americans: Sports, Education and the Human Spirit,” presented by the Young, Gifted and Black Residency in Honors Program at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday and Thursday. Ed Benavente of the South Bay Weightlifting Club won the senior division title in the 90-kilogram category of the recent Southern Pacific Weightlifting Championships.

The Pee Wee C1 Division Minor Hockey Assn. team from the Bay Harbor Olympic Ice Arena will compete in the Yankee Conference Super C Jamboree ice hockey tournament Feb. 19-24 in Hingham, Mass. The team is composed of players in their early teens. Other matches in Boston and Rhode Island are scheduled for the eight-day trip, according to C1 Coach John Mepham.

The second Marlboro Cup international soccer tournament will be held Feb. 20 and 22 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Competing will be three World Cup teams--the Soviet Union, Costa Rica and Colombia--plus Chivas of Guadalarjara, Mexico. Earlier this month, Miami hosted a Marlboro Cup tournament that included the U.S. National Team.

Entries must be received by next Friday for the annual city of Hawthorne Kiwanis Youth Track Meet. The event is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 12 and will be held at Hawthorne High School on March 3. The Bay Harbor Minor Hockey Assn. sponsors a learn-to-skate program for prospective youth hockey players Sunday mornings from 9 to 10 at the Olympic Ice Arena in Harbor City.
