ROUNDUP : Glendale Pulls Into Tie for Second in the WSC

Trailing by 14 points at halftime, the Glendale College men’s basketball team came back to register an important 65-61 Western State Conference win over host Santa Monica on Saturday.

Glendale’s Bruce Heicke, who finished with 17 points and eight steals, capped the rally by making both ends of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity with 10 seconds left.

Glendale (20-10, 8-4 in conference play) is tied for second place with Santa Monica (24-7, 8-4). Both teams trail first-place Valley by three games.

In other men’s games:

Valley 107, Bakersfield 79--Five players, led by Steve Ward with 25 points, scored in double figures as Valley romped to a WSC win over host Bakersfield.

Valley (20-9, 11-1) scored 62 points in the second half. Shawn DeLaittre scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Andre Harrell (17 points), McArthur Wells (14 points) and Shelton Boykin (12 points, 10 rebounds) also had big nights.

Moorpark 84, Cuesta 64--Roger Thomas scored 23 points and teammates Sam Crawford and Mike Waggoner scored 16 and 15 points to lead Moorpark (20-8, 8-3) to a WSC Northern Division win at home. Crawford handed out 16 assists while Greg Taylor pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for Moorpark.

BASEBALL

Canyons 11, Cerritos 3--Chris Vasquez went five for five with six runs batted in as host Canyons (3-1) defeated the defending state champions.

Moorpark 1, Mission 0--Jeff Berman outdueled Nick Lymberopoulos in a battle of right-handers in a nonconference game at Moorpark. Moorpark (2-2) scored its only run in the third inning when Darren Furlong singled and Mike Suarez doubled him home.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 87, Pierce 60--Michelle Cabaldon scored a game-high 19 points and Tressie Millender and Debbie Bernardo scored 15 and 14 to lead Canyons (9-3 in conference play) to a WSC win at Pierce. Millender also had 13 rebounds.

Pierce (10-17, 3-9) was led by Carol Schoenmann’s 18 points.

Cal State Northridge 55, Chapman 53--Denna Mulverhill scored a team-high 10 points for CSUN (10-14, 7-2), while teammates Haily Griffith (nine rebounds) and Julie Arlotto added nine and eight points to lead the Lady Matadors to a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. win at home.

Valley 78, Bakersfield 68--Claudia Rocha came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points--14 in the second half--to lead Valley (25-4, 11-1) to a WSC win.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

L.A. Lutheran 63, Coast Christian 49--Stephen Willweber scored 32 points to guarantee L. A. Lutheran a berth in the Southern Section playoffs in a Heritage League third-place tiebreaker game.
