HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Torrey Pines’ Senior Shows Way in 63-28 Victory

Gina Westby finally had the type of game Torrey Pines Coach Ken Baumann knew she could have. And what better time to be the team’s leading scorer than in the first round of the San Diego Section Division II playoffs.

Westby, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, scored 16 points in Torrey Pines’ 63-28 victory over University City Wednesday at Torrey Pines.

“This was Gina’s best game of the year,” Baumann said. “She hasn’t had this type of game yet. We haven’t asked her to score much but she’s certainly capable.”

Westby, who made eight of 15 shots, said she is finally recovered from an early-season bout with mononucleosis.

Karyn Armstrong, averaging 16 points per game, was battling a cold and played only two quarters. She finished with six points.

Baumann said his team’s main concern was University City center Charlotte Kornik, who was averaging 15.7 points per game.

“They have one fine basketball player in Charlotte Kornik,” Baumann said. “We had to take them out of the half-court offense to stop her.”

At halftime, Torrey Pines (16-8) led, 31-7, and Kornik had scored six points. She finished with 12 points.

University City finished the season 12-8.

Centurion Coach Steve Vukojevich said Torrey Pines was just the better team.

“They played extremely well,” Vukojevich said. “They shot real well especially the first half. I give a lot of credit Torrey Pines.”
