Robert Hager, athletic director and football coach at West Hills College in Coalinga, has been named head football coach at West Los Angeles College, announced Jim Raack , WLAC athletic director.

Hager succeeds Dick Jones, who resigned after the 1989 football season but remained as a counselor at WLAC.

Jones was hired in April, 1988, after WLAC dropped football for two years because of budget cutbacks in the Los Angeles Community College District. His 1988 and 1989 teams both had 0-10 records.

Jones was a last-minute replacement for Steve Bresnahan. Bresnahan was hired in March of 1988, but resigned three weeks later because he had decided he could not commute to WLAC nor move his family from their home in Mission Viejo, Raack said at the time.

Hager began his coaching career as an assistant at Vanderbilt University in 1980,, was tight end coach at Eastern Michigan University in 1983 and running back coach at Western Kentucky in 1984.

In 1985, he became head coach at St. Mary’s Prep School in Orchard Lake, Mich. In the next four years his teams had a 29-9 record. His 1988 St. Mary’s team was undefeated and ranked first in the state by the Associated Press and United Press International.
