Mike Lynn, who helped bring respectability to the Chaminade High basketball program, has resigned as the school’s basketball coach and athletic director effective at the end of the school year.

Lynn, 32, will move his family to the Sacramento area and look for a new job.

“My decision has nothing to do with basketball or Chaminade,” he said Thursday. “Everything I’ve got going for me here is great. Chaminade provided me opportunities I don’t think I would have gotten anywhere else. The kids I worked with were absolutely fantastic. This is just a life decision for me and my family.”

Lynn, a 1975 graduate of Chaminade, taught English for 11 years at the West Hills school, compiled a 134-87 record in nine seasons with the basketball team and worked as a tennis and volleyball coach.

Chaminade won three basketball league titles and advanced to the playoffs six times under Lynn, a far cry from the days when the Eagles served as area doormat in the 1970s. When Lynn played there, the school had no gymnasium and the team sometimes practiced outside when no sites were available.

Lynn was honored as The Times’ Valley Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a 22-5 record and the semifinals of the Southern Section 1-A Division playoffs in 1984. Chaminade was 14-11 this season and reached the 2-AA quarterfinals.

“We don’t have a dynasty-type program, but I’m real proud of the success we’ve had here,” Lynn said. “When I played here, the coaching wasn’t that good, so I wanted to see something good happen here.”

Lynn drew attention earlier this month when he sacrificed a first-round bye in the playoffs and agreed to play Carpinteria, which had been omitted from the 2-AA bracket because of a communication error with the Southern Section office.

The Southern Section allowed Carpinteria to enter the tournament on the condition that the Warriors find an opponent willing to play them.

“I figured maybe the next time it would have been my team looking for a game, so I scheduled the game,” Lynn said.
