HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Crenshaw Reaches City 4-A Final, 91-90

Guards Kevin Ollie and Alexous Scruggs combined to score 50 points, but it took four points in overtime from senior center David Washington to give Crenshaw High School a 91-90 victory over Reseda Cleveland in a City Section 4-A Division semifinal boys’ basketball game Friday at the Sports Arena.

Washington cost the Cougars a victory in regulation when he missed two uncontested layups. But in the overtime period, his inside scoring proved to be the difference as the defending City and State champions advanced to the City final for the third consecutive season.

“When I missed in regulation, everyone told me that they knew that I’d come back,” said Washington, whose overtime points accounted for his only scoring. “I just tried to go up strong with the ball in overtime.”

Washington finished off what teammates Ollie and Scruggs set up for Crenshaw. Ollie, a junior, scored 17 points in the second half, and Scruggs, a sophomore, scored 11 in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland (21-6) was led by senior guard Eddie Hill, who scored 24 points, including 14 in the fourth and overtime periods.

Crenshaw (22-4) will play Manual Arts in the final for the third consecutive season next Friday at the Sports Arena.
