COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Trachsel, Fullerton Win in Conference Opener

Sophomore Steve Trachsel pitched a seven-hitter to lead Fullerton College to a 6-3 victory over Golden West in the Orange Empire Conference baseball opener for both teams.

Trachsel, a right-hander, had six strikeouts, a walk and retired the leadoff hitter in eight of nine innings. Trachsel (3-1) retired 10 consecutive hitters from the sixth inning to the ninth. He allowed two hits and a run in the ninth before getting Mike Willey to ground out to end the game.

Fullerton’s Kevin Monson had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, and Jim Vlcek had three hits, a run scored and an RBI. Fullerton (9-2 and 1-0 in conference) had scored two runs in the second and four more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.

Brian Mena and Gerad Cawhorn each had two hits, including a double for Golden West (8-2, 0-1). David Turner (1-2) allowed 10 hits and six runs, four earned, for Golden West.
