PREP BASKETBALL : Servite Is Sizing Up Estancia in Southern Section 3-AA Final

Anaheim Servite High School (17-10) will have a slight height advantage when it plays Costa Mesa Estancia (19-10) tonight at 8:30 for the Southern Section 3-AA Division boys’ basketball title in the Bren Center at UC Irvine.

Newport Beach Corona del Mar (19-9), the Sea View League champion, will play Goleta Dos Pueblos (15-13), the fourth-place finisher in the Channel League, for the 3-A title at 6:45.

Servite has 6-foot-7 Steve Marusich, averaging 20 points in the playoffs, 6-4 Mike Coady and 6-4 Adam Anderson. Estancia’s tallest player is 6-4 sophomore Matt Fuerbringer, who is averaging 17 points in the playoffs.

In a girls’ doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona, Brea-Olinda (29-0), defending Southern Section 3-A Division and State Division III champion, will try to extend its 51-game winning streak against Palos Verdes (27-4) in the 3-AA title game at 8:30, after Garden Grove Rancho Alamitos (21-3) plays Costa Mesa (16-11) in the 3-A final at 6:30.

Brea-Olinda, ranked No. 5 in the nation by USA Today, is led by the backcourt of Aimee McDaniel and Tammy Blackburn. In their three playoff games, the Wildcats have an average winning margin of 30 points.

Jenny Newsome, who will play at both forward and guard, is averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds for top-seeded Rancho Alamitos. Costa Mesa, which upset third-seeded Bellflower and second-seeded West Covina South Hills, is led by freshman Olivia DiCamilli, who averages 15 points and 11 rebounds.
