COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Wins Conference Softball Opener

Wendy Robinson and Cathy Scanlan each had RBI singles in the second inning to help Orange Coast College to a 4-1 victory over Rancho Santiago in the Orange Empire Conference softball opener for both teams Monday at Rancho Santiago.

Kellie Newcombe also walked with the bases loaded in the four-run second for OCC (10-1, 1-0 in conference play). Rancho Santiago had scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Kristin Heizer allowed three hits to improve to 9-0.

In other Orange Empire Conference softball:

Golden West 1, Riverside 0--Pam Fogg (6-3) won her fifth consecutive game, combining with Lisa Kaufman on a five-hitter as Golden West (13-6, 1-0) won at home.

Saddleback 5, Fullerton 5 (12 innings, darkness)--Saddleback’s Sara Murillo tied the score with a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning. Murillo had two hits and three RBIs.

Fullerton’s Dawn Salter had two hits and two RBIs. Saddleback is 6-6-1, 0-0-1. Fullerton is 7-4-1 and 0-0-1.

In nonconference softball:

Cypress 1, Pasadena 0 (8 innings)--Laura Corson (6-1) pitched a four-hitter for host Cypress (9-2). Cypress scored in the eighth when Kerry Callahan doubled, went to third on a bunt single by Corson and scored on a throwing error.
