PREP ROUNDUP : Ledbetter Loses Her Perfect Game but Keeps Shutout

Junior Amy Ledbetter pitched a one-hitter in her first varsity start to lead Fountain Valley High School to a 5-0 victory over host La Quinta in a nonleague softball game Thursday.

Ledbetter was one strike away from a perfect game but Jill Bishop hit the ball down the left-field line to break it up.

In other nonleague softball games:

Laguna Hills 2, Loara 1--Sharron Oh scored on a Loara error in the seventh for host Laguna Hills (1-2).

Tustin 18, Laguna Beach 2 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Sheri Needham tripled, doubled, singled and had four RBIs to lead Tustin’s 12-hit attack.

Saddleback 2, Villa Park 1--Leanne Larriva tripled in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored on an error to break a 1-1 tie for host Saddleback (2-0).

In the Canyon softball tournament:

Canyon 4, Rolling Hills 2--Host Canyon (3-1) broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth on a grounder by Sara Roberts which scored Allison Rudd. Roberts was the winning pitcher in relief and had two RBIs.

At the Chino softball tournament

Valencia 1, Diamond Bar 0--Natasha Dumoski pitched a one-hitter, walked two and struck out seven to lead Valencia (3-1) in a third-round game.

Foothill 6, Chino 4--Kathy Shortall hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Foothill scored four in the first and two in the second in a semifinal.

In nonleague volleyball:

Esperanza 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Jason Galeener had 13 kills and Rocky Jones had 12 as host Esperanza (4-0) won, 15-8, 15-8, 15-5.

Santa Ana 3, Villa Park 1--Hector Salcedo had 25 kills to lead visiting Santa Ana, 15-5, 15-12, 13-15, 15-6.

Ocean View 3, Irvine 0--Ocean View (2-1) was led by Lee Quinn’s 15 kills and Chris Hocker’s 14 in a 15-10, 15-10, 15-13 victory.

In Garden Grove League boys’ swimming:

La Quinta 100, Pacifica 49--Brett Bhesania posted Southern Section qualifying times in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes 3.8 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.8) for host La Quinta (1-2, 1-0).

In Garden Grove League girls’ swimming:

La Quinta 82, Pacifica 61--Kim Bhesania qualified for the Southern Section championships, winning the 100 backstroke in 1:07.2 and helping the La Quinta medley relay win in 2:03.2. La Quinta is 2-1, 1-0.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

La Quinta 9, Huntington Beach 9 (La Quinta wins on games, 73-65)--La Quinta’s No. 1 doubles team of Peter Vu and Phu Truong, swept its sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, to remain undefeated this season.

Mission Viejo 11, University 7--Mission Viejo’s No. 1 doubles team of Vince Cheng and Jeff Holroyd swept their sets, 7-6, 6-1 6-1, at University. Both teams are 1-1.

In nonleague boys’ track:

Dana Hills 98, Foothill 38-- Matt Jordan broke his school record in the shotput with a 56-3 shot. His record was 54-10. Andy Marrone won the discus (147-8) and Dan Niednagel won the 800 meters (1:58.5) for host Dana Hills.

Huntington Beach 97 1/2, Newport Harbor 38 1/2--Huntington Beach’s Adrian Brown won the 300-meters intermediate hurdles in 41.4 seconds and Newport Harbor’s Brent Busch (41.5) was second at Newport Harbor. Brown also won the 110 high hurdles (15.0) and the long jump (21 feet 5 1/2 inches).
