COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Takes Conference Lead by Beating Golden West

Fullerton College moved into first place in the Orange Empire Conference baseball race by defeating Golden West, 6-5, Tuesday at Fullerton.

Fullerton, which improved to 15-3 and 6-1, scored three runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Benny Rodriguez hit a two-out, two-run triple in the inning.

Golden West (14-3, 5-2) scored two runs in the ninth and had runners on first and second when David Stephens struck out Steve McKowen to end the game.

Willy Speakman, who had two hits and scored a run on Tuesday, has 13 hits in 18 at-bats in the past four games. Winning pitcher Tom Kelly is 5-0.

In other Orange Empire Conference baseball games:

Rancho Santiago 10, Saddleback 5--A three-run home run by Steve Grack broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning at Saddleback. Eric Cedarstaff held Rancho Santiago hitless for four innings, but the Dons scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Rancho Santiago’s Matt Lackie didn’t allow a hit or a walk for 5 2/3 innings.

Saddleback (7-8, 2-5) scored five runs in the eighth inning, capped by a three-run double by Brian Hoialmen . Conrad Colby hit his first home run of the season for Rancho Santiago (15-4, 5-2). Grack’s home run was his fifth.

Riverside 11, Orange Coast 7--Orange Coast made six errors in the first two innings and visiting Riverside scored nine runs, five unearned and the Pirates lost their fifth consecutive game. OCC cut the lead to 9-7 with two runs in the seventh before David Anderlik replaced Jim Patterson (2-2). Anderlik pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the save. Riverside is 15-6 and 4-3. OCC is 8-12 and 1-6.

In nonconference baseball:

Cypress 16, Pasadena 3--Kevin Cook tied a school record with three doubles to lead Cypress. Doug McConathy had four hits and four runs batted in and Jason Bates had two hits and scored four runs for Cypress (12-9).

In Orange Empire conference women’s tennis:

Orange Coast College 9, Saddleback 0--Gina Garcia defeated Tami Blume, 6-2, 6-0, in No. 1 singles to lead OCC, 4-0 in conference play. Garcia and Iliana Adame defeated Noelle Schmidt and Lynne Dossey, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 1 doubles. For Saddleback, Tami Blume and Julie Ammon lost to Elena Birch and Dawn Baird at No. 2 doubles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. It was the first set that host OCC (4-0 in the conference) has lost this season.

Golden West 8, Fullerton 1--Cindy Laird defeated Danielle Conkey, 6-0, 6-3, to lead visiting Golden West. Fullerton is 1-8, 1-5 in conference.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Fullerton 6, Golden West 3--Casey Marshall defeated Andy Stewart, 6-0, 6-0, to lead visiting Fullerton.

Cypress 9, Rancho Santiago 0--John Swaino defeated Mike Bains, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to lead host Cypress. Cypress is 6-4 and 3-1.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Cypress 80, Riverside 31--Freshman John Frias won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.9 seconds and the 200 free in 1:56.22 for host Cypress (1-3 in the conference).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Riverside 79, Cypress 43--Renee St. Marseille won the 100-yard individual medley in 1 minute 8.6 seconds, the 200 individual medley and the 50 butterfly for Cypress (0-4 in conference).
