PALOS VERDES / REDONDO TOURNAMENT : El Segundo Beats Redondo, 5-0

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Old acquaintances are nice, Tate Seefried has learned--especially when they play a mean shortstop.

Seefried didn’t need to be introduced to Mark Lewis after Seefried transferred to El Segundo High School from Washington state last summer. Two years ago, Seefried and Lewis knew each other as sophomores at Rolling Hills before they both switched schools.

Saturday night, Seefried did the pitching and shortstop Lewis made all the tough plays behind him, as El Segundo got the better of the South Bay’s best baseball rivalry, beating host Redondo 5-0 in the second round of the Palos Verdes/Redondo Tournament.

For El Segundo, it’s a happy reunion.

Seefried struck out seven and walked only two en route to a three-hit shutout.

Lewis helped kill three Redondo rallies by turning one acrobatic double play and starting two others with slick feeds to second baseman Eric Stevenson.

Lewis also ranged deep to his left to rob Redondo’s Bryan Hammons of a base hit up the middle in the second inning, snapping up the ball off his shoe top and then spinning around behind second base to gun Hammons down by a step.

“There’s no question that Mark is a great shortstop,” El Segundo Coach John Stevenson said. “Those three double plays really set the tone for the game. Three times Redondo had a chance to get something going and three times we got the double plays.”

Seefried (3-0) cruised through every inning except the third and fourth. On both occasions, Redondo had runners on first and second but Seefried got batters to hit the ball at Lewis to start double plays.

“It’s great having Mark back there,” Seefried said. “He’s one of the best shortstops around. He’s got real quick feet and a real good glove.”

El Segundo (9-1), which came into the game averaging more than 17 runs per game, pieced together just enough offense to get the job done. Catcher Garret Quaintance led the way for the Eagles by going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

Redondo right-hander Artie Scarpino (1-2) struck out nine and allowed only three earned runs. El Segundo managed only eight hits off Scarpino.

In another Palos Verdes/Redondo Tournament second-round game:

Palos Verdes 8, Crespi 1--Jason Goldberg (1-1) struck out 11 batters and pitched his first complete game. He allowed only three hits and five walks in the first game of Saturday’s double-header at Redondo.

Junior first baseman Pat O’Hara led the offense for Palos Verdes (7-3) with a pair of home runs, his second and third of the season.

O’Hara’s second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the sixth inning, was a towering blast that easily cleared the right-field fence and landed on adjacent Prospect Avenue.
