UCSD Freshman Perfect in Softball

Freshman Kim Stutzman pitched a perfect game to lead UCSD to an 8-0 victory over visiting Augsburg College of Minnesota in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday. The Tritons (12-8) won the second game, 4-2.

Stutzman (5-0) struck out four and was never in danger of giving up a hit. Dana Chaiken doubled, tripled and drove in three runs to provide all the offense Stutzman needed. Lynn Moreno had three hits, and Lisa Mora had two.

Kathy Fogg (5-4) pitched a five-hitter in the second game.

WRESTLING

Cal State Bakersfield’s Richard Bailey, a Valhalla High School graduate, finished fifth at 150 pounds in the NCAA Wrestling Championships at College Park, Md., earning All-American status for the second consecutive year.

Bailey lost in the consolation semifinals to Townsend Saunders of Arizona State, 12-2, then won the fifth-place match over Doug Streicher of Iowa, 7-5.

BASEBALL

San Diego State (19-10, 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference) got five home runs and swept a doubleheader from visiting Utah, 3-2 and 10-4.

Eric Christopherson had two of the home runs, both in the second game, and four RBIs.

The other home runs came from Jeff Barry, who went two for three in the first game and knocked in three runs, Mike MacKinnon, who was two for four with three RBIs in the second game, and Steve Murphy, who went three for four with two RBIs and two runs in the second game.

Utah fell to 5-15, 0-3.

USD split a doubleheader with Pepperdine, losing the first game, 3-1, and winning the second, 6-5.

In the second game, Dave Pungres singled in Rick Doane from third in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie. Pungres then scored on a Tony Moeder double. Moeder hit a bases-empty home run in the first game.

Pitcher Mike Newby got his first victory, and Tom Cheek pitched three innings of relief for his fifth save.

USD is now 14-16, 9-9 in the WCC, and Pepperdine is 18-13-1, 10-5-1.

UC Santa Barbara took a doubleheader from host USIU, winning the first game, 5-2, and the second, 8-4.

USIU fell to 9-21-1 and UC Santa Barbara improved to 20-8.

Occidental beat UC San Diego, 8-6, in a game matching the top two Division III teams on the West Coast. Occidental (12-4), ranked 15th, took advantage of seven UCSD walks and two hit batsmen to saddle Dann Eaton with the loss. UCSD (10-8-1), ranked 11th, was led by Erik Judson’s three hits and two runs scored. It was only UCSD’s second loss in eight Division III games.

Cal Baptist got 34 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Point Loma Nazarene, taking the first game, 16-2, and the second, 10-2.

In the opener, PLNC’s Mark Ratekin doubled to extend his hitting streak to 22 games, but he went hitless in the second game.

Cal Baptist improved to 19-6, 7-3 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and PLNC fell to 12-13-1, 1-7.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Seventh-ranked San Diego State defeated No. 19 Ohio State, 15-12, 13-15, 15-2, 15-8. Eric Etebari had 22 kills for SDSU (17-10). Ohio State fell to 6-19.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State took a 6-3 victory over Southeast Louisiana (8-2) in the semifinal round of the consolation bracket at the UC Irvine Invitational.

In pivotal matches for SDSU (14-5), Tole Marinkovic defeated Ulf Borjeson at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, and Woody Yocom defeated Hakan Bennhage at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7).

SDSU plays Texas Tech (12-2) in today’s consolation final.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

No. 17-ranked USD (8-6) defeated Minnesota, 5-1. USD’s Tanya Fuller beat Jennie Moe, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, and teammate Aby Brayton beat Janice Igesund, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2. USD plays fourth-ranked USC today at 10:30 a.m. at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club.

San Diego State’s three-match sweep in doubles propelled the Aztecs (9-8) to a 6-3 victory over South Carolina.

TRACK AND FIELD

Gaylen Ames led San Diego State’s women to first place in a five-way meet with Cal State Northridge, Weber State, Long Beach State and Mankato State at Northridge.

San Diego State finished with 94.5 points. Ames won the long jump with a mark of 19-feet-5 1/4 and the triple jump at 41-5. Both were season bests for Ames.

The SDSU men finished in second with 51 points behind Northridge’s 72.
