SIDELINES : Simmons Wins Eastman Award

Lionel Simmons of LaSalle, who finished his career as college basketball’s third leading scorer, today was named the winner of the Eastman Award as college basketball’s top player.

It was the second major player-of-the-year award for Simmons, winner of the Naismith Award. He also is a finalist for the two other major prizes: the Rupp and Wooden awards.

The Eastman winner is selected by the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches.

Simmons, a 6-foot-7 forward from Philadelphia, led LaSalle to a 30-2 record this season, averaging 26.5 points and 11.1 rebounds a game.

The Explorers, who lost only one game during the regular season and won the Metro Atlantic Conference title, were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament by Clemson after holding a 19-point first-half lead.
