COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Anteaters Second in a Four-Team UCI Track Meet
UC Irvine’s Mike Morales won three events to lead the Anteaters to a second-place finish in the UCI four-team track meet Saturday.
Morales won the shotput with a personal best of 56 feet 6 3/4 inches, the hammer throw with a toss of 204-5 and the discus at 165-4.
Brigham Young University won the men’s and women’s titles. The Cougars won the men’s meet with 79 points, followed by Irvine (69 1/2), San Diego State (58 1/2) and Cal Poly Pomona (9). In the women’s competition, BYU scored 57 points, San Diego State (49), USC (47) and Irvine (32).
Irvine freshman Marieke Vellman leaped 18-11 1/2 in the long jump to remain undefeated in the event. Irvine junior Buffy Rabbitt won the 1,500 meters in 4:27.69 and finished third in the 800 in 2:15.11.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:
Chapman 0-5, UC Riverside 6-4 (second game 12 innings)--Julia Webb singled with the bases loaded and two outs in the 12th to lead host Chapman (30-11, 4-6) in the second game. Carolyn Fish had three hits and scored three runs, Sandy Olivas had four hits and Shelly Mahon (9-2) went the distance for Chapman in the second game. Laura Fay gave up eight hits and two walks, but earned the victory for Riverside (3-3 in conference) in the first game.
In Big West Conference women’s tennis:
UC Santa Barbara 7, Cal State Fullerton 2--The No. 1 doubles team of Tracie Johnstone and Debbie Golberger paced Santa Barbara with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Kelli Moore and Roseann Alva at Fresno. Santa Barbara (17-5 overall) extended its undefeated streak in conference play to seven.
