Share

Beth Burns, SDSU women’s basketball coach, Thursday announced the signing of four recruits to national letters of intent, including junior college and high school All-Americans.

Kieishsha Garnes, a 6-foot-3 center from Brooklyn, N.Y., earned All-American status while leading Hilbert College of Hamburg, N.Y., to two national championship tournaments and a sixth-place finish in 1990.

Garnes scored 1,168 points while at Hilbert, averaging 18.2 points and 10.5 rebounds.

The Aztecs also lured a high school All-American in Carmelia Bloodsaw, a 5-8 guard from J.O. Johnson High in Huntsville, Ala. Bloodsaw averaged 35 points last season and was among the top 10 national scorers at season’s end in statistics compiled by USA Today.

Burns said Elisha Johns, a 6-0 forward from Winslow (Ariz.), is one of the recruits she is most excited about. Though most high school players her height play inside, Johns operates and shoots from the outside. She shot 54% from three-point range during her high school career.

Also announced as committing on Thursday was Tameka McGlawn, a 5-8 forward from Wakefield High in Arlington, Va. McGlawn was named as one of the Southeast’s best players by Street & Smith, averaging 16.1 points last season and 27.6 as a junior.

These players join three other recruits announced earlier: Tammy Blackburn, a 1990 Cal Hi Sports All-State guard from Brea-Olinda; Tori Baker, a junior transfer from Oregon, and Michelle Miles, a junior transfer from UCLA.

Also Thursday, the Aztec men got the signature of Mike Ferguson, a 6-7 swingman from McLennan (Tex.) Community College where he averaged 11 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists last year.

And Paul Conrad, coach at Colorado Northwestern Community College, said James Lewis, a 6-2 1/2 guard (26.1 points), signed a letter of intent to play at SDSU but that the letter won’t be arriving any time soon. Lewis sent it home to Jeffersonville, Ind., for his parents’ signature.
