COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Babbitt’s Blasts Key Cypress Upset

Troy Babbitt had five hits, including a pair of two-run home runs, to lead Cypress College to a 12-4 upset of Cerritos in the championship game of the Alan Hancock tournament Friday in Santa Maria.

Babbitt, a freshman second baseman from Western High School, had five RBIs for Cypress. Babbitt, who has three home runs this season, became the second Cypress player to hit two home runs in a game in the tournament. Sophomore Terry Tewell hit a pair in Wednesday’s 8-7 victory over Hancock.

Cerritos (27-4) is ranked second in the Southern California baseball poll. Cypress (20-14) is unranked.

Freshman Tom Puppe had three hits and two RBIs; freshman Doug McConathy had three hits, scored three times and had two RBIs, and freshman Jason Bates had two hits and scored twice for Cypress (20-14).

Ken Tolbert, a sophomore left-hander, pitched an eight-hitter for the victory. Tolbert (5-3) had four strikeouts and walked six.

Cypress had 17 hits.

In the Channel Coast tournament:

Rancho Santiago 3, Consumnes River 0--Jay Hassell (5-0) allowed five hits and had four strikeouts in seven innings for Rancho Santiago. Conrad Colby singled and Marty Neff followed with a two-run home run in the seventh for Rancho Santiago (27-6), which lost to Citrus, 3-2, earlier Friday.

In the Visalia tournament:

Pasadena 10, Golden West 10--Pasadena advanced on a tiebreaker (fewest strikeouts) and Golden West (22-7-1) was eliminated from the tournament.

Golden West defeated Canada, 8-3, and lost to Fresno, 12-1, Thursday.
