Gary Anderson Has Workout for Buccaneers

Charger running back Gary Anderson, who is being considered for a trade, had a workout Friday for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Anderson, who sat out the 1989 season in a contract dispute, had a brief workout at the Buccaneers’ facilities, a Tampa Bay spokesman said Saturday.

Tampa Bay is one of at least three teams that have shown active interest in him, sources have said.

Charger General Manager Bobby Beathard has expressed an interest in trying to trade Anderson before the April 22-23 NFL draft.

In other Charger news, Joe Madden, who was demoted to administrative assistant from special teams’ coach in January, has been fired, a Charger spokesman said.

Madden, 55, will be paid for the remaining year on his original two-year contract, the spokesman said.

Madden has been replaced as special teams coach by Larry Pasquale, who previously served in the same capacity for the New York Jets.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

No. 18-ranked USD (11-9) defeated Oregon, 9-0, at Tempe, Ariz. USD’s Sakolwan Kacharoen defeated Kumi Nagmoto (Ore.), 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, and Aby Brayton beat Abner Goheen, 6-0, 6-1. USD’s Christy Drage, Laura Minnesto, Margo Mullally and Karen Lauer also won in straight sets.

UC San Diego, ranked No. 1 in Division III, defeated visiting Pomona Pitzer, 8-1, to improve to 12-4. At No. 1 singles, UCSD’s Christine Behrens defeated Shelley Keeler, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

No. 19 USD (21-4) ended its home season with a 17-0 record with an 8-1 victory over St. Mary’s in a West Coast Athletic Conference match. The Toreros’ Thomas Simonsen defeated Tony Pett, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, and Bob Mehran beat Greg Kobayashi, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. USD will play host to the WCC tournament Friday through Sunday.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State’s Tonya Chamberlain scored the winning run with one out in the 13th inning when UNLV’s left fielder dropped a fly ball, giving the host Aztecs a 2-1 victory and a split of their Big West doubleheader. Michelle Wesson pitched the last two innings for the victory, and Sara Ahearn threw the first 11 innings for SDSU (16-25, 7-12). The Aztecs went extra innings again in the second game but stranded seven runners and lost, 1-0, to No. 22 UNLV (31-14, 15-5).

Kathy Fogg threw a two-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks as UC San Diego won its own tournament, 3-1, over Cal State San Bernardino. Fogg (7-7) was aided by Pam Harnack’s run-scoring single and Dana Chaiken’s sacrifice fly. UCSD is 17-12.

BASEBALL

Nevada Reno, aided by two San Diego State outfield errors, scored sixth ninth-inning runs to defeat the visiting Aztecs, 9-8, in a nonleague game.

Jeff Barry went three for five including a two-run triple in the ninth, and Anthony Johnson went three for five for 26th-ranked SDSU (29-15).

The University of San Diego blew a 5-1 lead in the second game of a doubleheader and was beaten by host St. Mary’s, 4-3 and 9-6, in the West Coast Conference.

Catcher Sean Gousha helped build the Toreros’ lead with a two-run triple in a three-run second inning. USD fell to 17-25, 11-13 in the WCC.

WATER POLO

Host UC San Diego won three matches at the NCAA women’s western qualification tournament to advance to today’s semifinals against UC Santa Barbara at 10:15 a.m. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo plays UC Davis in the other semifinals. The finals will be played at 4:15 p.m.

TRACK & FIELD

Sophomore Vanessa Couch set a school record in the 3,000 meters (10:29.74), and sophomore Annette Ronnerman won three events as the Point Loma Nazarene women defeated host Pomona Pitzer, 74-61. Ronnerman took the 1,500 (5:00.40), 800 (2:18.18) and high jump (5-2). The PLNC men, led by double first-place winners Mike Silander and Christian Andreasson, defeated Pomona Pitzer, 88-64. Silander, a freshman, won the 100 meters (10.91) and 200 meters (21.87). Andreasson, a sophomore, took the javelin (180-7) and the triple jump (47-6).

RUGBY

The Old Mission Bay Athletic Club rugby team advanced to the finals of the Pacific Coast Territorial Championships in Phoenix by defeating Golden Gate, 26-12m in the semifinals.

OMBAC, led by Charlie Montgomery with eight points, will play the Old Blues of Berkeley, who defeated Belmont Shore, 26-20.

The winner will advance to the national championships in Denver May 12-13.
